You don't need to own a bass before your first lesson — come along and we'll work out what suits you from there. Younger beginners often do better on a short-scale bass, which is easier to reach and hold, while teens and adults can usually manage a standard full-scale instrument comfortably. If you're not sure whether to rent or buy, I'm happy to talk through both options and point you toward reliable beginner gear that won't break the budget — there's no pressure to buy anything through me or any particular store.
We talk about your goals and the music you're into, then get straight into playing together. It's relaxed and low-pressure, so we both know it's the right fit before you commit to ongoing lessons.
Neither is a prerequisite for the other — plenty of great bass players started on bass. If you're drawn to rhythm, groove and locking in with a drummer rather than chords and solos, bass is a great place to start.

Yes. For students who want formal recognition or are preparing for HSC Music performance, I teach to AMEB and ANZCA graded curricula, though most bass students prefer to focus on playing in a band context instead.
Lessons run weekly and range from 30 to 60 minutes depending on age and goals — we'll settle on the right length together after your first lesson.
All lessons are in person at the studio at 96 Queens Rd, Hurstville — an easy trip from Penshurst, Kogarah, Mortdale, Carlton and Beverly Hills.
